What is a bulkhead light?

A bulkhead light is a robust and durable light fitting that combines both practicality and style. For commercial, domestic, and outdoor applications, bulkhead lights are used almost anywhere, and nowadays with LED technology they last longer than ever. Bulkhead lights are available in a variety of wattages, finishes and colour temperatures and include Emergency bulkheads for businesses. With impressive lamp life and high IP-rated options available, these lights are designed to last for many years and tens of thousands of hours, giving you a reliable solution to lighting up your home, business, or garden.

Do you need to change the bulb in a bulkhead light?

Recently with the evolution of LED technology modern bulkheads are an integrated fitting without a separate light source (ie Bulb) . However, if you have an older style bulkhead fitting, then you can replace the bulbs when necessary. If they are fitted with older style incandescent or halogen bulbs we recommend using LED bulbs for these fittings as they are more energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and have a much longer lamp life.

Can bulkhead lighting be used indoors?

Yes, bulkhead lights can be used indoors. Due to their wide, even distribution of light, bulkhead lights are an ideal choice for use in commercial and industrial applications including hallways, stairwells and other areas where amenity lighting is required. This includes emergency lighting variation of bulkheads typically combined with ISO 7010 Legend Sets, these allow businesses to illuminate the nearest emergency exit in the event the power fails.

Are bulkhead lights waterproof?

The IP rating of the Bulkhead light indicates if it is waterproof. If a Bulkhead light has an IP rating of IP44 or above then they are specially designed to be waterproof and weather resistant and is made with a durable housing that protects the inner components from water damage. The higher the IP rating, the greater the resistance and protection from water sources such as rain. A simplified comparison between the ratings can be found below:

  • IP20: Provides protection against solid objects over 12mm but provides no moisture protection.
  • IP44: Only provides protection against solid objects and multi-directional water splashes
  • IP54: Splash-resistant and partially dust-proof
  • IP64: Splash resistant and dust-proof
  • IP65: Full protection from dust and multi-directional low-pressure water sprays

In conclusion, not all bulkheads lights are waterproof so ensure you check the technical specifications of the product and that the fitting has an IP rating of IP44 or higher to guarantee safe use outdoors or in damp areas such as bathrooms.
