As the nights begin to draw in, the UK will now be spending more time in darkness than the summer months. Lights within homes will need to be used for much longer to illuminate the living areas within the home, and many people choose to set timers on landings and in hallways for security purposes overnight. The theory stands that if an area is brightly lit, it will deter potential burglars from wanting to break in. But rather than figure out the complexity of some lighting timers, some homeowners are turning to innovative dusk to dawn bulbs which will keep their homes lit all through the night.
Dusk to dawn bulbs automatically switch on in darkness. They are used in many residential and commercial applications across the country, and they prevent people from breaking into homes, offices and other important buildings every day.
Steven Ellwood, Managing Director of BLT Direct, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of lighting solutions such as dusk to dawn lights, says, “Many people are put off by setting timers for their lights, purely because of the complexity of the process, and how often it needs to be modified. Timers might need to be changed on a monthly basis to keep up with the hours of daylight the UK gets. Dusk to dawn bulbs remove the need for this with their intelligent sensors. They react to light; when the amount of light in an area dips below a certain threshold, they will turn on automatically. This makes them the perfect replacement for people who don’t want to spend all winter fiddling with light timers to protect their homes.”
The bulbs function because of a crucial component called a photocell. These cells are sensitive to light, and when the light diminishes as natural daylight fades, the bulb will turn on. They will stay on throughout the night until the sun rises and returns the levels of light to an acceptable level. The unique sensor within means that there are no timers to be set and nothing to configure in order to get the light bulb working as it should.
Many people worry about electricity bills when they choose to leave light bulbs on all night, but the LED light bulbs used within these lighting solutions remove this issue. They are considered to be some of the most energy-efficient light bulbs available on the market right now, and after the initial investment of around £45.00 for the bulb, they are predicted to save hundreds of pounds over the course of their life span. BLT Direct estimates that, if electricity is charged at the standard rate of 12p per kWh, the potential savings could amount to £223.20 over the course of the manufacturer’s predicted life for one of these bulbs.
