BLT Direct, one of the UK’s leading online suppliers of lightbulbs and essential home accessories, has offered those struggling with everyday activities tips for getting though the average day, as a survey has revealed that 20 percent of the population in the country do not know how to change a lightbulb – or boil an egg.
The first ‘hack’ from the experts is to plan ahead. With busy lives taking over, it can be difficult for adults to find the time to undertake daily tasks like cooking meals. The secret to nailing this, according to BLT, is to batch cook once or twice a week. Setting busy adults up for at least half the week, batch cooking a meal will provide lunches and/or dinners for numerous days – leaving them more time to relax when they need it.
The next tip from the pros is to think more about the task in hand – for instance when ironing. Although ironing didn’t feature on the report, it’s well-known that many people struggle with this everyday chore when it comes to complicated garments. For shirts and clothes with buttons on, ironing these inside out will guarantee a smoother iron and ensure that every inch of the clothing is ironed.
Speaking about the survey’s findings, Steven Ellwood, Managing Director of BLT Direct, said, “We all struggle with some daily tasks, but the news that around 20 percent of the population cannot change a light bulb is incredible. A simple task that takes under a minute, getting to grips with this can save a lot of hassle further down the line and ensure people aren’t plunged into darkness for long periods of time.”
Another tip from the experts is ideal for heavy sleepers. Nowadays thousands rely on their mobile phone alarms to wake them up and allow them to spring out of bed during the week. But for those who find themselves deep in slumber often sleep through their alarm. However there is a way around this without investing in an expensive, loud alarm clock. Putting a mobile phone into a glass concentrates the ringing and makes it appear much louder. Leaving deep sleepers safe in the knowledge that they won’t sleep through, this simple trick can save time, money, and cut down on nightmares.
Steven, added, “There of course thousands of little hacks that can help people during common and not so common tasks, but these are some of the most common problems we’ve come across in the office.”
The survey was conducted by UK insurance company, Aviva. Surveying 2004 individuals across the UK earlier in the year, they also noted that nearly a third of the participants couldn’t cook a meal off the cuff, only 59 percent would know how to get rid of a food stain, and just 37 percent would be able to change a flat tire.
