Energy Saving Resolutions To Make This New Year

It’s that time of year again when we all start to think about our New Year’s resolutions and the sweeping changes we’ll commit to for the next 12 months. From losing weight to dry January, it can seem like you make the same resolutions year after year. In 2019, why not try making a resolution to save more energy in the home? Not only will this help you cut the cost of your energy bill, but it’s also a much greener, more environmentally friendly way to live.

The great thing about resolving to save energy is that it’s not half as difficult as sweating it out in the gym five days a week! To help you get started, we’ve come up with a few tips that are quick, easy and mostly low cost. All will help you lower your energy bills and save money in the process.

Energy Saving Bulbs

Why not start saving energy by using more energy efficient light bulbs, such as LEDs? The initial cost might be a little more, but they will provide you with the same amount of light while using less energy, which means a lower utility bill. There’s also the added benefit that they will not need to be changed as often due to a longer lamp life, so you’ll also be spending less on replacements. It’s a saver all round!

Check Your Insulation

If your home does not have efficient insulation, heat can escape through the roof and walls. This means a lot of the energy you use will be wasted and you’ll find you need your heating to be switched on for a longer period of time. Improper insulation is one of the biggest causes of energy waste, so it’s important to check your cavity walls and ensure that your insulation is up to the correct standards. Also look for drafts around windows and doors and check that your roof or loft is also properly insulated.

Night Lights

There’s a strong chance that if you have children, they might be afraid of the dark. This can mean leaving a night light plugged in all night long. A battery operated night light will reduce the amount of energy you are using, and your kids still have enough light to feel safe in the dark.

Turn Off Lights

Leaving the kitchen light on ‘just in case’ is something that we’re all guilty of. This year, instead of leaving the lights on when you leave a room, just turn it off. If any of the lights are on in the house when they don’t need to be on, turn them off. When it comes to saving energy, every little bit of effort counts.

Contact Your Energy Provider

If all else fails, or if you need a little bit of extra advice, contact your energy provider on things that you can do to save energy at home and potentially reduce your winter energy bill. It’s their area of expertise, so don’t be afraid to give them a call and ask for advice if this is an area that is fairly new to you. They may be able to recommend greener energy options such as solar panels, depending on the suitability of your property.
