Many homes have garages that are used on a daily basis but it is not often that they are renovated or even slightly improved, despite the fact some simple changes can make them much more useful. Most homeowners use their garages as a place to store their car but for some the garage is much more than a storage area. Some garages are used as workshops, playrooms or even rehearsal rooms. No matter what it is used for, having lighting is an essential improvement that provides many benefits.
Even if you only plan to store your car in the garage, having decent lighting is a wise investment. Reversing into a garage is fairly risky - there is always the chance of scraping up against a wall or hitting other clutter in the garage. This problem is only amplified at night. Having a well-lit garage makes it much easier to get in and out without potentially costly scrapes and bumps.
Garages are also used as workshops, where cars can be fixed up and small DIY projects undertaken. If you plan to use your garage for anything like this, decent lighting suitable for the task at hand is non-negotiable. This could range from strip lighting to ultra-bright spotlights or workshop lamps, dependent on the nature of the projects being undertaken.
For most, having a large central light fitting attached to the ceiling is the best option. This will provide more than enough light and won’t interfere with any use of the garage. Wall lights could provide a more targeted light source but will limit how much shelving and other storage systems can be installed.
When considering your lighting needs, don’t forget to add illumination outside too. Security lights with motion sensors are the obvious choice. The rise of LED technology means they are very cost efficient. A security light will not only help guide a car into the garage, it will also deter burglars, which will ensure that any possessions in the garage are safe from theft.
