Three tips to reduce your average electricity bill

With the cost of energy continuing to rise, it’s important to think about the different ways that you can find savings and lower your electricity bill. Thankfully, there are lots of things that you can do that go a long way to making your home more energy efficient, which means a less expensive energy bill. In this article, we’re going to offer you three tips to reduce your average
electricity bill.

Switch to LED light bulbs

There are lots of different ways to lower your average energy bill, but one of the easiest things to do is switch your older light bulbs to newer LED bulbs. LED light bulbs are much cheaper to run than traditional halogen bulbs, costing around £1.86 per year instead of £8.42 for older halogen bulbs (read more here).

These smaller savings stack up over time, resulting in dramatic savings across the year. LED light bulbs offer much more energy efficient than other bulbs, using around 90% less energy than traditional bulbs. What’s more, they last much longer too, so you won’t have to replace them as often.

Buy energy-efficient appliances

Another great way to reduce your energy bills is to make sure that you’re buying appliances that are designed with energy efficiency in mind. A good example of this can be found in washing machines, as running costs vary significantly between energy-efficient ones and standard washing machines.

It costs around £70 per year to power a standard washing machine, but that plummets to just £15 per year if you opt for an energy-efficient option. There are a couple of ways to know you’re buying energy-efficient appliances, but the easiest method is to look at the EU energy-efficiency ratings.

Invest in proper insulation

This option is quite a big investment, but it reaps significant rewards in terms of energy saving over time. Insulating your home's loft space and cavity walls is a great way to cut energy bills dramatically. For example, according to the Energy Saving Trust, semi-detached homes with insulated cavity walls stand to save around £155 per year on their energy bills. If you have solid wall insulation, these savings jump up to about £210 per year.

Even if you already have insulation, it might be worth considering topping up what’s there to make it more insulated. Current recommendations from the Energy Saving Trust suggest that insulation should be 270 mm thick, so it might help save you some money by adding a little more padding to your older insulation.
