It can depend on the fitting that you choose, but there are normally 7 parts that make up the standard light fitting. These are wiring, junction box, lamp holder, lamp, reflector, lens and trim. The wiring is what connects your lighting fixture to the power supply and is connected to the internal wiring of the light fitting by the junction box. The lamp, or bulb, is then connected to the lamp holder. Commonly the bulbs are sold separately from the holder, but at BLT Direct we offer every part of the fitting so you don’t have to worry about looking elsewhere for additional parts for your project.
Within the light, you’ll find the reflector, which helps to direct and spread the illumination of your lamp out into your space. Alongside a lens that diffuses the light in your room, there’s also a trim which is an optional decorative fitting that covers the space between your wall and light for a smooth, clean finish.
False ceilings are most commonly used in office environments, where the light fitting is seamlessly installed to appear part of the ceiling tiles. In these situations, we recommend our customers use LED panel lights. At BLT Direct, we offer a range of LED panel lights in different shapes and sizes to replace any size ceiling tile you may have. If you’re looking to install ceiling lights for false ceilings in a domestic environment, we recommend using downlights, which can also be found at BLT Direct.
It’s not always necessary to get an electrician to change a lighting fitting for you. We would always recommend a competent person replace the lighting fitting in the first instance. However, if they’re not able to do so, we would then advise you to employ a professional electrician to help with the task. If you’re simply swapping out an old fitting, it’s quite a simple task for you to do yourself if needed. However, if you find yourself struggling, there are also plenty of tutorials that quickly show you how to do it online. If you’re planning on changing a fitting in a potentially high-risk place, like your bathroom, you may feel more comfortable getting a professional electrician to complete the project for you.
Most ceiling light fittings are universal, which will make it extra simple when it comes to replacing your current fitting to spruce up your space. However, it’s always worth double-checking. You should always check the size of the hole in your ceiling as the sizes of some unusual down lighters, especially may vary. You should then make sure to find the right size to replace the fitting accordingly. It’s always going to be the same wires that are connected and disconnected at the power supply, and most ceiling light-boxes are very similar so you shouldn’t find yourself having any problems.
Choosing the right type of ceiling light for a room can make or break your space, so of course, it’s important to pick the right one—but which is the best? Your ceiling light is normally one of the pieces that draw the most attention in a room and is also the main source of lighting, so it’s a big decision to make. The choice will mainly come down to personal preference and what you want to achieve from the space you’ll be adding the new fitting to, but there are also a few considerations to think about.
Firstly, the mix of lighting in your space will influence your ceiling lighting decision. In most rooms, it’s a good idea to have a mixture of different lighting to create a welcoming and positive atmosphere. This mix should feature three different types of lighting; task lighting to bring illumination to areas where you’re working, accent lighting to highlight certain areas of a room, and ambient lighting to set the mood. Ambient lighting is a good choice for ceiling lights as this type of lighting is typically softer and is distributed evenly across the whole space. You can also play around with the source and change the light strength, the height of your fitting, and the type of bulb to create the desired mood in your room.
At BLT Direct we offer a variety of decorative light fittings that will give any room a wow factor when used as your ceiling lighting. Our collection of light shades range from modern pendants and chandelier-style fittings to the tiered pendant and wireframe pendant lighting.
There are three basic types of light fitting, ambient, task and accent. Firstly, ambient lighting is used to illuminate an entire room or outdoor area and is achievable with chandeliers, ceiling/wall fixtures, downlights or spotlights. Task lighting has the purpose of lighting up a given space to assist in a person's activity such as cooking, reading or any task requiring a more precise light compared to ambient lighting. Directional downlights and pendants are great for achieving that bright light with a small focal point. Finally, accent lighting has the purpose of highlighting a specific point of interest achievable by track-lights, directional downlights or wall-mounted fixtures.
